چکیده

The efficiencies of one implicit and three explicit time integrators have been compared in line dislocation dynamics simulations using two test cases: a collapsing loop and a Frank–Read (FR) source with a jog. The time-step size and computational efficiency of the explicit integrators is shown to become severely limited due to the presence of so-called stiff modes, which include the oscillatory zig-zag motion of discretization nodes and orientation fluctuations of the jog. In the stability-limited regime dictated by these stiff modes, the implicit integrator shows superior efficiency when using a Jacobian that only accounts for short-range interactions due to elasticity and line tension. However, when a stable dislocation dipole forms during a jogged FR source simulation, even the implicit integrator suffers a substantial drop in the time-step size. To restore computational efficiency, a time-step subcycling algorithm is tested, in which the nodes involved in the dipole are integrated over multiple smaller, local time steps, while the remaining nodes take a single larger, global time step. The timestep subcycling method leads to substantial efficiency gain when combined with either an implicit or an explicit integrator.

Efficient corrector iteration for DAE time integration in multibody dynamics

Efficient time integration is a key issue in computational multibody dynamics. Implicit time integration methods for stiff systems and constrained systems require the solution of a system of nonlinear equations in each time step. The nonlinear equations are solved iteratively by Newton type methods that are tailored to the structure of the equations of motion in multibody dynamics. In the prese...

Parametric dislocation dynamics: A thermodynamics-based approach to investigations of mesoscopic plastic deformation

A thermodynamics-based variational method is developed to establish the equations of motion for threedimensional ~3D! interacting dislocation loops. The approach is appropriate for investigations of plastic deformation at the mesoscopic scale by direct numerical simulations. A fast sum technique for determination of elastic field variables of dislocation ensembles is utilized to calculate force...

Nonlinear Cable equation, Fractional differential equation, Radial point interpolation method, Meshless local Petrov – Galerkin, Stability analysis

The cable equation is one the most fundamental mathematical models in the neuroscience, which describes the electro-diffusion of ions in denderits. New findings indicate that the standard cable equation is inadequate for describing the process of electro-diffusion of ions. So, recently, the cable model has been modified based on the theory of fractional calculus. In this paper, the two dimensio...

A Comparative Analysis of TLCD-Equipped Shear Buildings under Dynamic Loads

This study targets the behavior of shear buildings equipped with tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) which attenuate dynamic load-induced vibrations. TLCDs are a passive damping system used in tall buildings. This kind of damper has proven to be very efficient, being an excellent alternative to mass dampers. A dynamic analysis of the structure-damper system was made using the software DynaPy, de...
